WATER TROUBLESHOOTING CHART: This chart is merely to familiarize you with problems and their possible causes.

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSES
Excessive chlorine (or its alternative) use *Hot and humid weather with intense sun.
*High bather load.
*Low Cyanuric Acid level.
Algae*Poor circulation and filtration.
*Low Free Chlorine/alternative level.
*Neglect of shocking.
*Neglect of maintenance schedule.
*Algae spores in the air-carried by wind.
Cloudy Water *Poor circulation and filtration.
*Low Free Chlorine/alternative level.
*Neglect of shocking.
*High pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness levels.
*Early stages of Algae.
*Microscopic particles suspended in water.
Corrosion of metallic parts (walls, floor, rails, ladders, light fixture, equipment). *Low pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness levels.
*Placing chemicals in the skimmer(s).
Cloudy Green water *Low Free Chlorine/alternative level.
*Neglect of shocking.
*Early stages of algae.
Green, or Blue-green tint to the water *Low pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness levels.
*Copper in the water (heater-----?)
*Use of a Metallic Algaecide.
Brownish-red tint to the water *Low pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness levels.
*Iron in the water (light fixture-----?)
Stains *Failure to recognize colored water.
*Ongoing low levels for pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness.
Scale *High pH, Alkalinity, or Hardness levels.
Eye and Skin irritation (common with use of chlorine, but not with its alternatives). *Low Free Chlorine level
*Excessively high Free Chlorine level.
*High or Low pH or Alkalinity levels.
Musty Odor (common with use of chlorine, but not with its alternatives). *Low Free Chlorine level.
*Presence of algae.
Water Line (Scum Ring) *Suntan lotion, deodorant, or make-up
*Body oils.
*Dirt or other debris
Foam *Ongoing presence of a water line.
*Low Hardness level.
*Use of a Quaternary Algaecide.
Excessive chemical use *High Total Dissolved Solids reading.
Chemicals okay but water chemistry is still poor. *Poor circulation and filtration.
*Neglect of shocking.
*Neglect of maintenance schedule.
